We all go through hard times in our lives. Whether it’s a hard breakup, loss of a job, depression, money stresses, anything, you have two choices. Let it consume you and keep you down or move forward. Here are some tips on how to make yourself happier during a hard time and trust me, they work! Two days ago, I didn’t even recognise the girl I was. I was unhappy, broken, but I decided to turn that all around and now I’m feeling great!
1- Write a list of good things about yourself
My friend gave me this advice and it helped. Write down a list of things you love about yourself or your life. Allow yourself to realise how good you are or how good your life actually is and use that to remain positive and focused. Tell yourself you’re worth more than what you’re allowing right now and it won’t be long before you realise it. You deserve to feel good about yourself. You deserve to know how good you are.
2- Turn to friends
Friends are the best. They will be there for you during any hard time. You could have been out of contact for weeks or months or even years but I bet you someone will be willing to give you the time of day to help you through a tough time. Learn to open up to somebody and allow them to give you their support and advice. Lean on them, trust them and then focus on enjoying the conversations you have. Have a laugh, joke, be positive. You’ll soon be feeling better. When I go through a tough time, my friends are my rock.
3- Think positive thoughts
Doesn’t matter what your situation is, you can get through a hard time if you think positively. You have the power to control how you feel or how you react to certain situations. Practice positive thoughts. If you find yourself upset or worrying, stressing or feeling down, reject those thoughts right away and tell yourself you’re strong, you’re going to get through it. Positivity wins every time! It could be just a matter of days before you’re feeling better.
4- Eat healthier and exercise
It’s true. When you’re feeling better about yourself, you reject those bad feelings and bad thoughts. In the words of Elle Woods “Exercise gives you endorphines, endorphines make you happy” … and it’s true, it releases anxiety, it energizes you, boosts your confidence and a whole load of wonderful things. You could be feeling so down one day then you go for a run or hit the gym and arrive home feeling amazing and happy! Try it.
5- Listen to music
Music is a great way to feel better. How I use music to feel better is I get in the car or go for a walk/run and blast all my favourite songs on full volume. I like to listen to fast, heavy, upbeat songs when I’m feeling down or stressed and it automatically gets me pumped. It motivates me and makes me feel better about life. Whether it’s music you can relate to at that moment or whether it’s just fun music to cheer you up, bang some tunes on and get happy.
6- Know your worth
This one took some practice for me and really, the thing that made me realise my worth is speaking to my close friends and family who always have nothing but positive things to say to me. Know that you weren’t put on this earth to be miserable, stressed or be treated like complete shit. Just know that you’re better than all that. Tell it to yourself every day. Tell yourself you deserve better and eventually you will get better.
7- Make plans
The best way to move forward from a bad situation is to make plans. Whether it’s a career change or a vacation, make a plan to do something. For me this was both a career plan and a trip to Colorado and a trip to New York. The second I decided I was doing both of them, I felt better. I felt excited. We all need something to look forward to in life and if you can’t seem to find something to focus on, then create something. You deserve a bit of fun anyway!
8- Count your blessings
This could tie into the first one. But count your blessings. Think about all the things you have qdone
to live for. For me, this is my children. They make me happier than anything else in this world so they are the perfect thing to concentrate on. Find happiness in the smallest of things and be appreciative for the fact that you feel that happiness.
9 – Do things you enjoy
Have some “Me” time or spend time with your friends. Do things you enjoy. Don’t sit around missing out on life just because you’re going through a tough time. I get it, some days I have to literally force myself to get up and dressed and leave the house but when I do, I feel better. How I make myself feel better is with makeup or with horses. A simple trip to the farm to cry into my horse’s neck does me a world of good. So I don’t know, maybe get a horse? Haha. Pamper yourself, look after yourself, stay happy and focus on things you love doing.
10- Focus on yourself
Don’t focus on what’s going wrong. Don’t focus on anyone who’s hurt you. Don’t give anything that doesn’t deserve your time, any attention. Focus on you. Focus on your life, your goals, your achievements. Keep smiling. Don’t worry about what other people are doing or what’s making you sad. Focus on your future and your happiness. Buy a planner, write notes, organise your life. Stay focused on #1.
11- Block out the bad
Allow yourself to ride the waves of emotion that fill you when you’re going through a hard time. Doesn’t matter what it is, it will come and go. I allow myself a few days of feeling down and being on an emotional rollercoaster then I block out all the bad. So I reject any bad thought that comes to my head. Any memories, any questions, any anger. Blocked – and moving forward only!
12- Switch up your look
This may not make any sense to a guy but for a women, isn’t it liberating when we change our look from one extreme to another? For me, whenever I go through a breakup or just want to move forward in life with some change, I dye my hair. So the other day I decided to dye my hair from blonde to brown and I love it. It’s like a huge “Screw you, this is a new me, onwards with life”.
